well im new in these parts, but ive been lurking this forum for quite a while

while i lurked i saw one or two posts about achlorophylous (albino) lophophora seedlings...

so i thought id show u all wot happens when u get one succesfully grafted...

this was the first graft i ever did... "Liz" was grafted at end of january this year...

if your a nook member u will probably have seen this already...

it stalled for 9 weeks before any growth was obvious...

to be continued...

unfortunately the orignal graft on pereskiopsis has bit the dust (root rot)

but fortunately i did manage to clone it before that happened...

sorry about the quality of the last pics, my camera was stolen...

well ive had some shit luck this year, so i feel blessed to have this little fellow around

hope u enjoyed the show!

I saw your original pics (the first few shown here) on the nook, and have been waiting ever since to see the results. Well done!

There are a few other albino loph cultivars around, photos can be found on mushmush.

Again, spectacular work.

yeah very impressive, would love to see an alkaliod break down of one of these just to see if it is any different on that lvl, there is a myth / legend about the white species being extremly potent.

taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Native_American_Church

The Fabled White Peyote of The Grand Canyon and Four Corners Area

Archaeological discoveries in Arizona and Southern Texas indicate that peyote has been used by the Southwestern Tribes and their ancestors since antiquity. Peyote has been found carbon dated as 10,000 years old in caves in Southern Texas and Arizona. The mummified samples did not resemble modern peyote and were larger and more domed in comparison to modern populations of Lophophora williamsii. These samples also contained up to 6% mescaline by weight even after thousands of years in a desiccated state. Modern Lophophora varieties average 3% mescaline in comparison. The Dine (Navajo) oral traditions and those of other Southwest tribes indicate that a cold tolerant, high altitude variety of peyote existed in the area of the Grand Canyon in ancient times[citation needed], called "white peyote" which was rumored to be of cosmic potency.

Recent discoveries and botanical evidence indicates modern Lophophora species may in fact be divergent hybrids of Lophophora diffusa and a species recently named Lophophora brackii[citation needed], a high altitude domed "white" peyote with 'Z' patterns and articulated ribbing that originates from a single population confined to a mountain near Viesca, in the northern state of Coahuila, Mexico. Modern Lophophora varieties exhibit pollen structure which ranges from 3 pored pollen from its western ranges up to 9 pored pollen in the Eastern Range where Lophophora decipiens grows under extremely arid conditions, characteristics of a natural hybrid. Lophophora diffusa more closely resembles primitive cacti than the other Lophophora varieties and this species also exists as an isolated population in a mountainous area and is more cold tolerant[citation needed] than Lophophora williamsii populations.

anyone germinating loph seeds should have some pereskiopsis at hand... just incase anything interesting should pop up!

Very true! Up to now i´ve wasted about 3 or 4 albino lophs because i havent had a good grafting stock at hand! Now i have plenty of pereskiopsis but unfortunately i dont get albino lophs anymore. I´m not sure why. But because i like your post, i want to try it again. Yesterday i planted a few hundred lophs seeds and i really hope that i´ll get something white! bye Eg

Welcome uare I too have spent many a time waiting on updates whilst lurking at the nook... You have some truly envious Aussies over here just wishing the import laws werent so strict A huge congrats on the successful propagation and cultivation of your grafts, especially the new bubs that you have grafted I remember first seeing your graft on the nook and thinking she didnt stand much chance of survival (from what has been said about them, not you as a gardener ), but when I saw her fatten up with promising growth, I could help but envy the hell out of ya

Awesome work, and PLEASE keep updating us with pix and keep them new grafts coming! Lets hope Liz can become mass propagated on a huge scale and eventually become a world traveller to many a cacti-enthusiast's garden Oh to dream...
