Stillman
SO anyone tasted any of the Tricho fruit recently. I read that T spachianus fruit is supposedly very good eating? I've hand polinated a couple different types of Cereus for seeds and to taste them.
shruman
Super PedroNot recently about a year or so ago but yeah I recken they taste alright, maybe a little bland & sometimes a little stringey fibrous I think due to lack of water. But yeah deffinitely edible & enjoyable.

flumsquid
Great pics! how do you guys keep birds off freshly pollinated flowers?Lately all my trich flowers that i pollinate start fattening up at the fruit, and then birds sit on the flowers and snap the whole flower and fruit off.Has any one dealt with this? Cheers

GoOnThen
Len flower opened last night. I wasn't expecting it to open for at least a few more days but it matured really quickly I presume from the hot days we have had.The problem is I wasn't organized with any pollen so I couldn't pollinate it. I have tried dusting with calcium hydroxide and then its own pollen so we shall see what happens. Before I did that I cut off all of the filaments so I can send some to any one that wants some I am just a bit unsure how to deal with them now they have been removed.CheersGot
GoOnThen
So what is the best way to deal with these so they can be posted. At the moment they are sitting in the container with the lid off.CheersGot
Hellonasty
Put then in a container/bag that is opaque and does not allow light in. Keep cool. Should be good for a week or so. Freeze and it lasts longer (month or 3).
nitrogen
Personally I'd get the pollen off of them, then put the pollen in a container with a desiccant to remove the water content - the problem with those filaments is that the pollen will pull moisture, and the moisture will lead to the pollen going bad pretty quickly.. If you dessicated the whole filaments that would work too - but you for sure don't want them to be damp in a ziplock bag for long at all. There is a product in the USA called "Damp Rid" which is excellent for this purpose. In general I like to collect the pollen by putting a glass/cup under the mouth of the flower, and using a knife or any such utensil to fluff the pollen off the filaments and down into the glass - can also tap at the outside of the flower to get pollen to fall out into the glass. Popular Post Micromegas
Great seeing everyone's flowers, really cool. Here we go again! The pink flowering cactus is a trich, it came from Bunnings lord knows from where before that. It is exceptionally pink. It also flowers in mid-winter. However, it got so exuberant this year it fell over under the weight of its own flowers! so now I have three of them instead of one. Also out of thousands of flower buds, I would say only 5% face south, south-east or south-west. The rest (95%) face north, east, west or a combination of two of those. They are following the sun, perhaps it's hormonal. Anyone else observe this. Almost no flowers face south! This time, Happy New Year folks, Micro.

Stillman
Hey Micro that pink flowering one can you tell me more about it, stunning colours. All of them are stunning actually but that one took me by surprise.
Micromegas
There's more coming! All of those pictures are from a single evening.I don't know what I can tell you about the pinky. I went into bunnings one day a few years ago and found it. I thought at the time it was some unusual peruvianus, at the very least I picked it as a trich although it is not entirely obvious at first. I have posted photos of this plant before flowering in winter, when the flowers are perhaps even pinker. It was about 30cm I think I paid $60 which I thought was pretty steep! My feeling is it will grow into a clumping plant with many branches between 2 and 6 feet (maximum). It has a tendency to "twist" inside and grow on lean, and has a less robust woody core than other trichs although this is not unusual for clumping plants of moderate height. It has a lust for flowers, probably too much. It grows at moderate speed.Unfortunately it is nigh impossible to collect pollen in my garden. Bees the little thieves take everything! My assumption is it is a cross between a globular echinopsis and a columnar trich of some kind. For example:
nitrogen
Wow - never seen flowers like that on trichs.. Micromegas - if you really want to get the pollen you can always sacrifice a flower - chop it off right before it opens and go harvest the pollen safely away from the bees. Likewise, you can introduce pollen into a flower that has not yet opened by prying it open.
